☕🥂 Coffee, Champagne, and Conversations: Space‑A Travel as a Retired Military Family ✈️

There’s something about being outside that invites conversation. Birds chirping 🐦, the faint tap of a woodpecker somewhere in the distance 🌳. Spring air settling in. That’s how this episode started — right in our backyard.

Welcome back to Coffee, Champagne, and Conversations. (And just for the record, the champagne this time was water 💧. We were hydrating. It was already pushing 80 degrees ☀️.)

In Episode 3, we sat down to talk about Space‑Available (Space‑A) travel ✈️ and what it really looks like for a retired military family — the wins ✅, the losses ❌, and the lessons learned along the way.

✈️ Space‑A Travel: Wins, Losses, and Reality Checks

We’ve tried Space‑A travel multiple times. Sometimes it works beautifully ✨. Other times… not so much 😅. And that’s the nature of it.

Space‑A is not something you approach expecting guarantees. It’s a lot like the stock market 📈 — you don’t jump in assuming you’re going straight to the moon 🚀. You approach it knowing it might get you where you want to go, but you absolutely need a backup plan, especially for getting home 🧭.

⚠️ A Quick Disclaimer

As of March 22, 2026, there is an active conflict overseas involving the U.S. military 🇺🇸. Because of that, Space‑A availability can change quickly — sometimes with little to no notice ⏱️.

Everything we share here is based on our personal experience 📝. Please take it with a grain of salt 🧂 and always do your own research before traveling.

📍 Understanding AMC Terminals (Especially in the DMV)

There are Air Mobility Command (AMC) terminals across the United States and overseas 🌍. Since we live in the DC–Maryland–Virginia area, most of our experience comes from terminals close to home.

One of the biggest lessons we learned early on:
Location matters. 🚗

We once drove five hours to Norfolk 😩, only to get bumped at the last minute. What made it worse was realizing later that we had two terminals within 40 minutes of homeJoint Base Andrews and BWI.

Lesson learned: research first 🔍.

❌ No Guarantees — Ever

If there’s one thing to remember about Space‑A travel, it’s this: nothing is guaranteed.

You can be sitting at the terminal, bags packed 🧳, thinking you’re about to board — and still not make the flight. We’ve been that close.

Planning matters. And sometimes, not getting on the flight is actually a blessing in disguise 🙏.

🕒 Category 6: The Power of Time

As retirees, we fall into Category 6 — which sounds intimidating at first.

But here’s the upside: Category 6 has time ⏳.

Active duty travelers have limited leave days. Retirees? We have flexibility — and with Space‑A, flexibility is everything.

Bonus: rank doesn’t matter. Everyone is equal 🤝. Boarding priority comes down to when you signed up, not who you are.

🛫 BWI vs. Andrews: Know the Mission

Not all terminals are created equal.

  • BWI ✨ is a full airport — food options 🍔, space to walk, and a bit more comfort.

  • Andrews AFB 🇺🇸 is mission‑driven — dignitaries and cargo.

That means if you fly from Andrews, you may end up on a cargo plane ❄️🪑.

Important question:
Are you okay flying cargo?

⏰ Hurry Up and Wait (The Military Way)

Space‑A follows a familiar rhythm:

  • Get there early ⏱️

  • Make roll call 📣

  • Wait

  • Pay your fees 💵

  • Wait some more

The cost? Often under $20 one way 💸 — but lodging and food can add up if you’re delayed.

🥨 Pack Snacks. Seriously.

Do. Not. Go. Hungry. 🚫🍽️

Food options can be limited or nonexistent. Pack snacks. Pack extra snacks. Trust us.

📄 Paperwork Matters (Especially With Kids)

Before traveling, make sure you’ve completed the AMC travel request form and have:

  • Passports 🛂

  • Dependents 14 years of age or older MUST possess a valid DOD ID card. For children under the age of 14, please bring documented proof of guardianship from DEERS (Click here for DEERS website)

No paperwork = no flight.

🏨 Lodging Isn’t Guaranteed Either

Base lodging is space‑available 🏨. Retirees do not get priority.

Always have a backup hotel plan 🛏️. We’re not fans of “thugging it out.” We need pillows, sheets, and a real mattress 😌.

🤔 Would We Do Space‑A Again?

Yes — with the right mindset.

Space‑A works best if you:

  • Stay flexible 🧘🏽‍♀️

  • Have backup plans 🗺️

  • Embrace the adventure

Germany is a great jumping‑off point 🇩🇪, especially with Europe’s train system 🚆.

💬 Final Thoughts for the Cat 6 Crew

Cat 6 crew — this one’s for you 🖤.

Don’t let anyone tell you Space‑A isn’t for retirees. You can do it.

✅ Do your research
✅ Know the base mission
✅ Pick the right terminal
✅ Have a plan (and a backup plan)

At the end of the day, it’s all about what you make of it ✨.
